Description

Phoenix Bikes is an Arlington, Virginia nonprofit that uniquely combines youth educational programs with a full-service bike shop. We pursue a dynamic mission: harnessing the power of bikes to help youth build passion, purpose, and a place in the community.

The Education Program Manager leads Phoenix Bikes’ innovative, year-round youth education programs for 6th-12th graders and related community programs. Over the next three years, we are poised for a 60% increase in the number of students in our programs and are looking for an exceptional leader to drive this exciting growth. This position reports to the Executive Director, supervises one full-time Program Coordinator, and engages a wide range of volunteers and partners in support of educational programming.

Teaching (65%):

  • Lead and supervise hands-on learning sessions for 6th-12th grade students in bike mechanics and safe bike riding. This includes selecting appropriate bikes for refurbishment, adapting teaching methods to different students' learning styles, problem-solving with students during repairs, and inspecting and ensuring bikes are safe upon completion.
  • Build meaningful relationships with students that encourage and support their learning and development.
  • Drive students to and from offsite bike clubs, typically in a 15-passenger van.
  • Create a welcoming, well-organized, fun learning environment that celebrates diversity, ensures student safety, and encourages student growth.
  • Set clear expectations for appropriate behavior and enforce those expectations.

Program and People Management (35%):

  • Manage student recruitment and retention; significantly increase numbers of youth participants and program graduates, with an emphasis on engaging hard-to-reach youth.
  • Develop, strengthen and implement educational curriculum to meet the needs of youth and expand programming in alignment with our strategic plan.
  • Schedule, implement, and staff off-site programming at schools and other sites; serve as the liaison with school teachers, school administrators and nonprofit partner staff.
  • Manage the Give-a-Bike program, including building partnerships with nonprofit and government partners, distributing bikes to community members in need, and ensuring appropriate follow-up with recipients.
  • Supervise the Program Coordinator and provide strategic guidance over the programs that the position manages, including youth rides, advanced mechanics classes, and our junior race team.
  • Recruit, train and retain part-time bike club instructors (volunteer and paid) to expand the Earn-a-Bike program and other youth programs.
  • Maintain accurate records to track individual youth progress and overall program metrics, help move the organization toward tracking outcomes in addition to outputs, and regularly assess programs’ effectiveness and alignment with Phoenix’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Raise the visibility of Phoenix Bikes and its youth programming by tabling and speaking at school and community outreach events.

Required Skills and Experience:

The ideal candidate for this role will

  • Have a proven track record (2 years+) of successfully teaching or training 6th-12th grade youth, preferably in a hands-on role, and be passionate about seeing them learn, succeed and have fun.
  • Have a curiosity for how things work and a natural inclination for taking things apart and putting them back together again. The teaching portion of this position is focused heavily on bike mechanics, so you'll either need to be a seasoned mechanic already (our strong preference) or a quick and aspiring learner to become one.
  • Be energized by fast-paced environments and be known for your ability to stay calm and patient when juggling competing demands.
  • Be hard-working and high energy. This is a physically demanding job: it requires you to be on your feet and to regularly be lifting and moving bikes and equipment. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Have exceptional people and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively across a diverse population and build meaningful partnerships.
  • Have experience managing staff or volunteers.
  • Be a critical thinker and natural problem solver who easily identifies what needs to be done and takes initiative without being prompted by others. This job requires an ability to look at large program goals, make a plan for how to implement them, and evaluate what is and isn't working.
  • Be organized, attentive to details and comfortable managing complex schedules.
  • Be able to commit to a Tuesday - Saturday work schedule.
  • Be a safe driver with a clean driving record and the willingness to regularly transport students in a 15-passenger van.
  • Be fluent in English, with a strong preference for candidates who are also fluent in Spanish.

Equal Employment Opportunity:

We celebrate and embrace the diversity of everyone who walks through our doors and strive to be an inclusive place that cultivates compassion, expands perspectives, and grows the future stewards of our collective community. In our hiring and in our work, we do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, marital status, age, national origin, ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition, pregnancy, genetic information, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, veteran status, or any other status protected under federal, state, or local law.

As an organization working directly with youth, we require all staff to successfully pass a background check as a condition of their hire.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary of $53,000-$60,000, depending on experience
  • 15 days paid time off, 5 sick days and paid federal holidays
  • Group health insurance
  • SIMPLE IRA including 3% employer match (staff are eligible after one year)
  • Access to wholesale pricing on bicycles and accessories
